Harmony Prenatal Test

Harmony Prenatal Test

What is the Harmony Prenatal Test?

The Harmony Prenatal Test is one of the most accurate non invasive prenatal tests (NIPT) to predict the chance of a chromosomal abnormality in a pregnancy (greater than 99% for Down Syndrome). It is a new DNA-based blood test that has been extensively tested in pregnant women both over and under 35. It can be carried out from 10 weeks gestation.

When you’re pregnant, your blood contains fragments of your baby’s DNA. The Harmony Prenatal Test analyses this DNA in a sample of your blood to assess the risk of Down Syndrome (trisomy 21) and two other genetic conditions, trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome).

Traditional screening tests can miss as many as 15% of Down syndrome cases in pregnant women. Harmony was developed to be a more accurate prenatal Down Syndrome screening test for all women, regardless of age or risk.

What happens?

The obstetric consultant will perform a dating ultrasound scan to make sure that you are at least 10 weeks pregnant.  The consultant will also provide you with full pre-test counselling and will be able to answer any questions you might have. If you decide to have the test you will be asked to sign a consent form.  We will then simply take a small blood sample that will be sent off for analysis.  The results will be made available to us within 2 weeks.

How do I get the results?

Results will be communicated to you by phone and then by post.  Where necessary, a further visit to discuss the results with our consultant will be arranged at no additional cost.

Approximately 3 out of 100 women will require a repeat test.  This is due to technical problems with the analysis of the sample and does not suggest that there is a problem with the baby. If you wish to repeat the test, this will be at no extra cost.

How much is the Harmony Prenatal Test?

The test is currently £550.  This includes the ultrasound dating scan, pictures to take home with you, screening results (including fetal sex if requested), plus any pre-test or post-test counselling with our obstetric consultant.
