Growth and Well-being Pregnancy Scan (16 weeks to term)
A growth and well-being ultrasound scan can be undertaken from 16 weeks of pregnancy to term. This scan can give you reassurance that the baby has a heartbeat, is moving around (if it’s too early for you to feel it) and that it’s growing normally.
From 16 weeks gestation/pregnancy we can also tell the gender of your baby, if you would like to know.
The growth of the baby is assessed by taking measurements of the head, abdomen and thigh bone and an estimate of the fetal weight can be calculated. The volume of the amniotic fluid, the placental position and appearance, the fetal presentation (breech/head first) and the blood flow in the umbilical cord are also assessed.
A growth scan is particularly useful when there is any concern about the growth/size of the baby especially in women who have had complications such as pre-eclampsia, growth restriction, or diabetes in a previous pregnancy or who have developed a problem during the current pregnancy.
No GP referral is required and appointments are generally available at short notice
Who will do the scan?
Our growth and well-being scans are carried out by our specialist midwife sonographers.
What will happen?
The midwife sonographer passes a handheld device called an abdominal probe over your skin. It is this probe that sends out ultrasound waves and picks them up when they bounce back. A black and white picture of the baby will appear on the ultrasound screen. The midwife sonographer will carefully examine your baby’s body and at the end will explain the findings of the scan with you.
How do I get the results?
After the scan all the information will be put into a report and the midwife sonographer will explain what you should do or who you should see next in your pregnancy.
How much does it cost?
A Growth and Well-being Pregnancy Scan at The Wells Suite is £100. This includes the consultation appointment, your ultrasound scan, a report and pictures to take home with you.
