Professional profile

Richard graduated as a doctor from St.George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 2000 and then carried out his basic surgical training on the Reading and Oxford surgical rotation. This was where he developed an interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

He was awarded the Girdlestone Scholarship from Oxford University and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, where he worked as a clinical research fellow. Following this, he gained a doctorate for his work on rotator cuff tendon failure, for which he was also awarded the prestigious Didier Patte Prize by the European Society of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery in 2009. He has spent many years lecturing and tutoring for Oxford University. Richard’s Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training was on the Oxford programme.

In 2013, Richard was offered a fellowship with the Brisbane Upper Limb Unit, which is the major trauma centre for Queensland, Australia. He worked there for 12 months, gaining further experience in all aspects of upper limb surgery, including performing replantations. During this time he also became an Associate Lecturer for Queensland University.

In 2014, he was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone Hospitals. He enjoys his role and specialises in Upper Limb Surgery. His special interests include shoulder and elbow surgery, rotator cuff problems, tendon problems, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, arthritis of shoulder and elbow and upper limb trauma.
